White Supremacy Is Terrified of Indigenous Unity
A haka in Aoteroa New Zealand has set off a firestorm of white supremacist hatred around the world.
Indigenous Māori and allies have been protesting a devicive bill introduced into by Aotearoa New Zealand’s coalition party, currently in power. More specifically, a bill introduced by the libertarian ACT party, a minor party, to undo Māori rights laid out by one of the founding documents, Te Tiriti o Waitangi (The Treaty of Waitangi).
David Seymour, the leader of the ACT party is justifying dismantling Māori rights in the name of “equality”. Insinuating that Māori have special rights which non-Māori don’t. He has labeled these rights similiar to “aparthied” and as being “racist”
However, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, is an agreement between two peoples, not races. Māori and the British Crown. Ever since the signing of this treaty, the british have done everything in their power to delegitimize it through cultural genocide, land theft and actual aparthied.
This shouldn’t be a surprise because the British carried out very similar atrocities and theft on massive scales in many other countries.
What David Seymour avoids to mention is that his version of equality leaves out equity for Māori. You see you cannot have equality without justice and justice for Māori means equity.
For too long Māori have been overrepresented in all the bad statistics in Aoteroa New Zealand. Health outcomes, prisons population, education and more. Although these areas have improved over a number of decades, they have done so because of the focus on equitable systems which are inclusive of Māori.
This is not apathied. This is not racism. This is about fixing the injustices of a colonial system that favours Europeans. It is about grandfathering white priviledge.
The Haka That Went Viral
If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is. It has gone ultra viral!! A show of resistance from the Māori party of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Some people think indigenous resistance is about violence. On the contrary. Indigenous resistance is an expression of love. Love for their people. Love for their culture. Love for their ancestors. Love for their land. Only a deep sense of love can bring people together to resist tyranny. Only love!
But for many who empathize with colonizers, in particular the European flavour, these domonstrations of resistance can seem like a personal attack. An attack on their priviledge.
Colonial Self-Victimisation
Self victimization can manifest in a number of ways. In today’s world, social media is the place to vent. And vent they did. Below is a post by a Māori influencer from Aotearoa NZ, in solidarity with Hana’s haka. The commnts section, however, paints a different picture.
This is only the tip of the Iceberg. There is a real fear in the West of indigenous unity. European colonial powers tried to eradicate indigenous populations around the world and failed. This resurgence of indiginous unity and solidarity from allies is changing the global, political landscape. Long may it continue!!
